The Boiler Upgrade Scheme: £7,500, or £9,000 for oil and LPG
Last checked 30 September 2026. Grant rates and deadlines change — confirm on GOV.UK before acting.
A government grant towards replacing a fossil fuel heating system with a heat pump. It covers England and Wales, has no income test, and is open to homeowners and private landlords. Funding now runs to 2029/30, which makes it the most stable scheme on this site.
What it is worth
- £7,500 towards an air source or ground source heat pump.
- £9,000 if your home is off the gas grid and you are replacing oil or LPG heating with an air source or ground source heat pump. This higher rate runs until 31 March 2027.
- £2,500 towards an air-to-air heat pump.
- £2,500 towards a heat battery, once claims open. At the time of checking, Ofgem did not yet list heat batteries as claimable, so ask your installer for written confirmation.
Who it is for
Anyone who owns a home in England or Wales with a fossil fuel heating system. There is no means test, which makes this the fallback route for households outside the Warm Homes: Local Grant thresholds. The insulation requirement that previously blocked many applicants has been removed.
How it works
You do not apply. An MCS-certified installer applies on your behalf and deducts the grant from your invoice, so you never handle the money. That matters practically: choosing the installer is choosing the application. Get three quotes.
What it does not cover
It is a contribution, not full funding — see what you actually pay. It does not cover Scotland or Northern Ireland, which run their own schemes.
A deadline worth acting on. If you heat with oil or LPG, the £9,000 rate ends on 31 March 2027. Installers get busy ahead of deadlines, so a quote this autumn is worth more than a quote in February.
